New Honda Performance Development Off-Road Race Vehicle
While the Honda model lineup has earned a sterling reputation for many things, off-road performance typically isn’t one that is a focus of the conversation. That may all change with the development of the new Honda Performance Development off-road race vehicle. With a return to off-road racing in mind, the engineers at Honda Performance Development have recently unveiled the powertrain that they believe will put them at the forefront of the off-road racing circuit.
While elements like the Honda Variable Torque Management Four-Wheel Drive System under the hood of the 2016 Honda Pilot will deliver capable performance, they won’t win races. The new off-road race vehicle on the other hand, may be just what the doctor ordered to take home the checkered flag. Scheduled to make its debut in the SCORE Baja 1000 desert race this November, this innovative race car will have some serious power under the hood.
What’s Under the Hood of the Honda Off-Road Race Vehicle?
Recent images of the preferred power platform show a twin-turbo Honda HR35TT V-6 engine that has some serious muscle. Paired with an Albins ST6 sequential transmission, you can expect instantaneous upshifts for race-winning thrills. To combat the rough terrain of desert off-road races, the Honda desert racer will be equipped with FOX racing shocks and off-road-ready General Grabber tires. More details and performance specs will be released closer to race day in November. This venture by the Honda Performance Development division represents the first Honda entry in a four-wheel desert race since the HPD Desert Pilot competed in Class 6 in 2012.
We can’t wait to hear more about the new Honda Performance Development off-road race vehicle and add some more awards to the Honda trophy case. While no further details have been released, rumors point to the racer being based on the new 2016 Honda Pilot platform, an option available here at Allan Nott.
